Plan + wall detail
1
Expansion gap ¼″ at every wall, hidden by trim. Exaggerated here.
2
Staggered joints End joints at least 8″ apart row to row.
3
T-molding Finishes the floor at the doorway.
4
Quarter-round Covers the gap. Nailed into the baseboard/wall.
5
Plank Floats — nothing fastens it down.
The floor floats: it must be free to move at every edge.

Order of work

01
Read your plank’s install guide — acclimation, underlayment and vapor-barrier rules differ by brand.
Check first
Your plank’s rules for acclimation, underlayment and vapor barrier — read them before you buy the extras.
Wait up to 2 days — planks acclimate in the room (if your brand requires it)
Many rigid-core planks need none; some brands ask for 24–48 h in the room at living temperature — follow the install guide. Prep while you wait.
02
Pull off any shoe molding. Undercut door casing with a jamb saw.
03
Check flatness with a long straightedge. Fill dips over 3/16″ in 10 ft.
Check first
Fill dips over 3/16″ in 10 ft before the first row goes down.
04
Plan rows: room width ÷ plank width. If the last row comes out under ⅓ of a plank, split the difference between the first and last rows.
Check first
Work out the last row first: under ⅓ of a plank, split the difference between the first and last rows.
05
Start in a corner with ¼″ spacers. Click rows together; stagger end joints at least 8″ (6–12″ by brand).
Check first
¼″ spacers at every wall, pipe and cabinet — the floor needs room to move.
06
Cut: score with a utility knife, snap. Jigsaw for notches.
07
Last row: rip to width, pull it tight with the pull bar.
08
Pull the spacers, install transitions, then trim — nailed to the wall or baseboard, never into the floor.
Check first
Nail trim to the wall or baseboard, never into the floor.

Mistakes that ruin the job

3 mistakes
1
Nailing trim into the floor
It pins the floating floor so it buckles or gaps as it moves. Nail quarter-round into the baseboard.
2
No expansion gap
Leave ¼″ at every wall, pipe and cabinet or the floor peaks in summer.
3
A sliver last row
Measure first. A 1″ strip at the doorway wall looks sloppy and won’t lock.
