Framing elevation
1

Stud Vertical framing, 16″ on center, cut to fit.
3
King stud Full-height stud beside the opening.
4
Jack stud Also called a trimmer. Holds up the header.
5
Header A flat 2× — allowed because the top plate is within 24″ above it.
6
Cripple Short stud between header and top plate.
7
Bottom plate Screwed to the subfloor. Dashed part is cut out in the doorway.
Red squares on the dimension line = stud layout marks, like the red boxes on a tape measure.

Order of work

01
Find the ceiling joists with a stud finder and decide how the top plate gets fastened.
Check first
Which way do the joists run? If they run along the wall, plan blocking before you buy — screws into drywall alone won’t hold the top plate.
02
Snap the wall line on the floor. Transfer it to the ceiling with a plumb bob or laser at both ends.
03
Cut the plates, lay them side by side and mark the stud layout every 16″ plus the door rough opening (34″ × 82-1/2″).
Check first
Mark the door rough openings on both plates, and leave the bottom plate in one piece until the wall is fastened.
04
Fasten the top plate to the joists and the bottom plate to the floor.
05
Measure each stud position floor-to-ceiling (they vary), cut, and screw or toe-nail it in.
Check first
Measure at every stud — floors and ceilings aren’t flat, so don’t cut them all to one length.
06
Frame each door: king studs, jack studs, a header (flat 2×4), cripples. Then cut the bottom plate out of the doorway.
Check first
Wall fastened top and bottom before you cut the bottom plate out of the doorway.
07
Check the wall for plumb every few studs before drywall.
08
Hang drywall horizontally, ½″ off the floor, joints staggered; screws 16″ apart into studs.
Check first
Mark the stud centers on the floor and ceiling so you can find them through the sheet.
09
Tape and mud: bedding coat, fill coat, finish coat — overnight between each. Sand lightly, then prime.
Wait 12–24 h — bedding coat dries
Premixed compound: overnight between coats (12–24 h; longer when it’s cool or humid). Setting-type compound (20, 45 or 90-minute) lets you do the coats the same day.
Wait 12–24 h — fill coat dries

Mistakes that ruin the job

3 mistakes
1
Top plate with nothing to grab
If the ceiling joists run along the wall, screws go into drywall only and the wall wobbles. Find the joists first; add blocking.
2
Cutting every stud to one length
Floors and ceilings are never flat. Measure at each stud location and cut to fit — a stud ⅛″ long bows the ceiling.
3
Cutting the doorway plate too early
Leave the bottom plate continuous until the wall is fastened, or the opening racks out of square.
